Free Shipping - What That Really Means
Share
It's one of the most common promises you'll see when shopping online: Free Shipping! It sounds great. But here's the thing — we all know that nothing is truly free. Those postage costs have to go somewhere, and in almost every case, they've simply been baked into the product price from the start.
The Hidden Cost of 'Free' Postage
When a seller offers free shipping, they've calculated an average postage cost and added it to every item's price. That works fine if you're buying a single item. But start adding more items to your basket and something interesting happens: the shipping cost embedded in each product price accumulates rapidly, while the actual cost of shipping those items together increases only marginally. You end up paying for shipping several times over — you just can't see it.
Here's a simple illustration. Imagine a retailer who has baked a £4.99 postage allowance into every product price:
| Items ordered | Hidden postage paid (@ £4.99/item) | Actual shipping cost | You overpay by |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 item | £4.99 | £4.99 | £0.00 |
| 2 items | £9.98 | £5.99 | £3.99 |
| 3 items | £14.97 | £6.99 | £7.98 |
| 5 items | £24.95 | £8.99 | £15.96 |
The more you buy, the more you overpay — silently. With transparent shipping, what you see is what you pay.
At Music Bits, we take a different approach. We charge shipping separately, so you can see exactly what you're paying and why.
Transparent, Calculated-to-the-Order Shipping
Our shipping is calculated at checkout on an order-by-order basis, taking into account the weight, dimensions, and value of your specific items. This means we charge the minimum amount possible for your actual shipment — not a padded average. To give you a sense of typical costs:
| Order type / example | Approximate order value | Shipping charge |
|---|---|---|
| Small accessories (e.g. picks, strings, capo) | £5 – £30 | From £2.99 |
| Medium items (e.g. effects pedal, tuner, strap) | £30 – £100 | From £3.99 |
| Larger items (e.g. ukulele, snare drum, microphone) | £100 – £300 | From £4.99 |
| Full-size instruments (e.g. guitar, keyboard) | £300+ | From £12.99 |
| Click & Collect (in-store pickup) | Any | Free |
Exact shipping costs are calculated at checkout based on your specific order. The figures above are illustrative examples.
For customers ordering multiple items, this approach can represent a significant saving compared to retailers who've quietly rolled postage into every price tag.
Not All Shipping Is Equal
There's shipping, and then there's shipping. Some online sellers attach the cheapest label they can find, drop the item in a bag, and send it on its way. At Music Bits, we do things rather differently.
Every order is carefully packed by hand. We use bubble wrap, appropriate void fill, and double-boxing where required — because musical instruments and audio equipment deserve to arrive in the same condition they left us. We take pride in our packing, and our customers notice.
Fully Tracked, Every Time
All of our shipments use a fully tracked service. That means both you and we can see exactly where your order is at any point in its journey. You'll receive notifications when delivery is due and when it has been made, along with evidence of delivery — typically a photograph or recipient signature. No more wondering whether your parcel is sitting in a depot somewhere or has been left with a neighbour three streets away.
Fully Insured in Transit
Every item we ship is fully insured in transit. In the unlikely event that a courier damages an item or a parcel goes astray, your purchase is fully protected. We can arrange a replacement quickly or issue a refund where appropriate — without you having to spend hours navigating chatbot mazes or filling in endless claim forms.
Full insurance also gives couriers greater incentive to handle packages with care. It's a small but meaningful detail.
Yes, this level of service costs a little more than the bare minimum. But anyone who has ever dealt with a lost or damaged parcel — and the stress that comes with it — will tell you it's a very small price to pay for genuine peace of mind.
The Click & Collect Advantage (And a Surprising Truth About Our Shop)
Here's something our more thrifty customers have already worked out: because our shipping is calculated separately and transparently, it's actually cheaper to shop in-store or use our Click & Collect service if you're nearby. No shipping charge at all.
And that leads us to a myth worth busting: shops are not more expensive than the internet. When you factor in the true cost of online shipping — whether visible or hidden — our in-store prices are genuinely competitive. A growing number of musicians from across Lincolnshire are realising this, and we're seeing customers travel from ever further afield to visit us.
We've had customers pop in whilst on holiday in the area, others passing through, and some who've made a special journey specifically to try and buy an instrument in person. Our record so far? A customer who travelled all the way from Glasgow. We were genuinely touched.
And perhaps that says something important. For serious musicians, trying an instrument before you buy it isn't a luxury — it's essential. No photograph or specification sheet can replicate the feel of a guitar in your hands or the sound of a drum in a room. Sometimes the journey is part of the investment, and we think that's rather wonderful.
The Bottom Line
Free shipping is rarely free. At Music Bits, we believe in transparency — in our pricing, our packaging, our tracking, and our service. You know what you're paying, you know your order is protected, and you know it will arrive safely. That's a promise we're proud to keep.
