How to Care for Your Ukulele

Why Ukulele Care Matters
A well-maintained ukulele plays better, stays in tune longer, and lasts a lifetime. Whether you own a budget soprano or a premium concert uke, a little regular attention goes a long way.
1. Keep It Clean
After every playing session, wipe down the strings and body with a soft, dry cloth. Sweat and oils from your fingers accelerate string wear and can dull the finish over time. For the body, use a dedicated instrument polish — never household cleaners.
2. Store It Properly
Always store your ukulele in a case or on a wall hanger away from direct sunlight, radiators, and open windows. Extreme temperature swings are the enemy of tonewoods — they cause cracking, warping, and glue joint failure.
3. Control Humidity
Ukuleles are made from wood, which expands and contracts with humidity changes. Aim for 45–55% relative humidity. In dry conditions (especially winter), use a soundhole humidifier to prevent the top from cracking. In very humid climates, a dehumidifier in your case can help.
4. Change Your Strings Regularly
Strings lose their brightness and intonation over time. As a general guide, change them every 3–6 months if you play regularly. Fresh strings make a dramatic difference to tone and playability. If you're unsure which strings suit your uke, pop into the shop — we're happy to advise.
5. Check the Tuning Pegs
Friction tuning pegs can loosen over time. If your uke won't hold tune, try tightening the small screw on the peg. Geared tuners may need occasional lubrication with a tiny drop of machine oil.
6. Watch the Nut and Saddle
The nut (at the headstock) and saddle (at the bridge) have a big impact on playability. If strings are buzzing or the action feels too high, these may need adjustment. This is a job best left to a professional — our in-house setup service can sort this quickly and affordably.
7. Get a Professional Setup
Even a new ukulele benefits from a professional setup. We check intonation, action, nut slots, and tuner function — making sure your instrument plays as well as it possibly can. Book a setup with us in-store or get in touch online.
Final Thoughts
Caring for your ukulele doesn't require much time or expense — just consistency. A clean, humidified, well-strung uke will reward you with years of great playing. If you have any questions about your instrument, our team is always on hand to help.
