Amazon is one of the most visited shopping sites on the planet. But here's something many shoppers don't realise: when you buy on Amazon, you're usually not buying from Amazon at all.

Amazon Is a Marketplace — Not a Shop

The vast majority of purchases are made from third-party sellers, not Amazon itself. That's not necessarily a problem — but it's something every shopper should understand before clicking 'Buy Now'.

You're Almost Certainly Paying More

Amazon charges sellers significant fees to list and sell on the platform — often considerably higher than other sales channels. Those costs don't disappear; they get passed on to you, the buyer, in the form of higher prices.

• Your legal rights may not apply. UK consumer protection law applies to UK-based sellers. Overseas sellers operating outside the UK are not subject to the same trading standards, which means that if something goes wrong, enforcing your rights can be extremely difficult — or simply impossible.
• Warranty and returns can vanish. If you've ever tried to return a faulty item under warranty after the initial return window on Amazon, you may have found the option has simply disappeared. Amazon is a marketplace; beyond a certain point, it has no obligation to step in on your behalf.

We're Not Anti-Amazon

We want to be clear: we're not telling you never to shop on Amazon. It has its place, and for many purchases it works perfectly well. What we are saying is this — go in with your eyes open.

Before you buy, it's worth doing a little due diligence:

• Check the price. Amazon will often tell you it's the lowest available. It rarely is. A quick search of the retailer's own website can save you money.
• Check who you're actually buying from. Look at the seller's name, their feedback rating, and — importantly — where they're based.
• Check their reviews independently. Google Reviews and Trustpilot give you a broader picture than Amazon's own feedback system.
