Using Lemon Oil on Fretboards

Caring for Your Fretboard with Lemon Oil
Proper fretboard maintenance is essential for keeping your guitar or bass playing smoothly and looking great. Lemon oil is one of the most popular products for conditioning unfinished wood fretboards, particularly rosewood and ebony.
What is Lemon Oil?
Despite its name, most commercial "lemon oil" products designed for fretboards don't actually contain lemon oil. They're typically mineral oil-based cleaners with lemon scent and cleaning agents. These formulations are specifically designed to clean, condition, and protect unfinished wood fretboards.
When to Use Lemon Oil
Apply lemon oil to your fretboard during string changes, typically every 2-3 months depending on how often you play. Signs your fretboard needs conditioning include:
- Dry, dull-looking wood
- Rough texture
- Visible dirt buildup
- Fret ends feeling sharp
How to Apply Lemon Oil
- Remove all strings from your instrument
- Wipe down the fretboard with a clean, dry cloth to remove loose dirt
- Apply a small amount of lemon oil to a clean cloth (never directly to the fretboard)
- Rub the oil into the wood, working it into the grain
- Let it sit for a few minutes to penetrate
- Wipe away any excess oil with a clean, dry cloth
- Allow the fretboard to dry completely before restringing
Important Precautions
Do not use lemon oil on maple fretboards. Maple fretboards typically have a finish (lacquer or polyurethane) and should only be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth.
Use lemon oil sparingly—a little goes a long way. Over-conditioning can actually damage the wood and cause build-up.
Alternatives to Lemon Oil
Other options for fretboard conditioning include:
- Specialized fretboard conditioners
- Pure mineral oil
- Bore oil (used for woodwind instruments)
